White Salmon and Bingen are located just north across the Columbia River from Hood River.  The combined population is around 3,000 total and they are located in Klickitat County.  White Salmon was incorporated in 1907 and has remained a small "bedroom community to The Dalles and Hood River.  Logging and some local farming have been part of the local economy, but the largest employer over the years has been the SD&S lumber mill located on the waterfront of Bingen.

In recent years with the increase in tourism and recreation and the attraction of the local natural beauty, there has been an increase in local lodging and dinning demands.  Many people have specifically chosen to live in White Salmon and Bingen specifically for the quieter life, but still enjoy the close proximity to entertainment and shopping that Hood River has to offer.  The White Salmon River is also nearby and has a strong salmon and steelhead run every year.  In fact, Oregonians will cross the Hood River Toll Bridge without complaint just to fish these returning fish.

Windsurfers and Kite boarders will often times camp or rent rooms on this side of the river too, depending on where they are planning to launch from.  Some of the better wind spots are on the Washington side.
