Night Skiing On Mt. Hood

Night Skiing On Mt. Hood

Anyone living in the Hood River (or greater Portland) area knows that Mt. Hood offers spectacular skiing at any one of its three ski resorts, but its amazing just how often we all forget the nocturnal version of this much loved sport. “Night skiing”, or so we call it, has virtues not experienced during the hours of solar penetration.

For one, the parking lot is never full and most nights you can ski right onto the lift (the exception is college ski night or the every popular ski for food). Next, it snows at night too! Many a night I have found fresh tracks in new powder that had filled in the day skiers tracks. Less traffic makes for more face shots. Also, there is an uncanny surreal feeling to skiing between brightly lit patches of snow and near dark shadow. The dimmer light adds to the sensation of floating and flying that are already exhilarating during the day. At night floating crystals of snow catch the light of the electric lights and shine like a thousand floating crystals. You don’t get to see that during the day. And to top it off, a post ski beer just tastes better when its dark outside.

So go against the grain and dodge the masses, visit the ski areas at night. Mt. Hood Meadows is 25-30 minutes from Hood River. Timberline is about 45 minutes away and Ski Bowl is 40 minutes.
